Guacamelee! 2 is a game where you play as a Luchador who fights magicians, demons, and giant beasts, sometimes as a chicken. Doesn’t that sound like the best game ever? If you liked the first game and are a fan of Metroidvania titles, then this action-packed sequel is for you.
The game starts during the first title’s finale, with protagonist Juan Aguacate taking on a much easier version of Guacamelee’s final boss. Since then, the legendary luchador has been enjoying his retirement and even settled down with a family until the mexiverse is in danger, resulting in him donning the mask and fighting again.

From there, players explore a number of worlds based on Mexico as they solve puzzles, get power-ups, and become the best super luchador ever and it’s all fun to do. Controls are smooth and feel great, so it never feels cumbersome when players have to do platforming challenges or take on enemies with their fists.
Speaking of combat, beating up enemies in this game feels great with a variety of moves to learn. Whether players are in Juan’s regular form or in his chicken state, fighting off these mooks always feels good.

Like all Metroidvania titles, exploration and backtracking are key to having a good time. Thankfully, the game does have a few fast-travel points so it’s never too tiresome. Plus, the rewards are always worth it, whether they be power-ups or items that increase your health and stamina.
If there were any flaws, it would be that the game isn’t too different from the first. The visuals are a bit better than before but otherwise, these games are very similar. That’s not a bad thing though, so if you’re in the mood for a beat-em-up with plenty of exploration, Guacamelee 2 is for you.
