We finally have our very first glimpse of an animated Gizmo in HBO Max's new 2022 teaser trailer, which showcases several upcoming titles for the streaming service. It's not much to go by, but seeing any sort of footage from an upcoming project is still solid news, and confirmation that it's happening. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is a project that has been in the works for years, and while a third live-action Gremlins movie could still be on the table, at least now we finally have something to sink our teeth into while we wait.
Set before the events of the original 1984 Christmas classic, a young Sam Wing encounters the Mogwai known as Gizmo in a 1920 Shanghai. The official synopsis reads as follows:
"[Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai] tells the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins."
The original 1984 film Gremlins, which was directed by Joe Dante, with a screenplay by Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg as producer, was a huge hit on its release. Its sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch didn't quite live up to the original when it wreaked havoc in theaters in 1990, but has since become appreciated and is now considered a cult classic.
While a third movie in the official live-action series may never happen, despite the fact the rumor mill continues to spin, it looks like the new TV series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is going to be canon, not unlike hit animated Netflix show Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. Let's just hope the former isn't quite as family-friendly or as tame as the latter.
