Green Lantern: Earth One Co-Creator Appeals to DC Studios to Give Him A Job

For a creator, there’s probably nothing more exciting than seeing your work heading towards a better path. Aside from other promising projects, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s future DCU will include a new Green Lantern series that will be called Lanterns. Given that it is expected to become one of the biggest and most anticipated projects of DC Studios, the co-creator of the comic book series Green Lantern: Earth One requested to take part in the upcoming installment.

Green Lantern: Earth One artist and co-writer, Gabriel Hardman, pitched himself to direct an episode of DC's new Lanterns series. He communicated his interest via Twitter, writing: “I saw that my Green Lantern: Earth One art was used by [James Gunn] to pitch the Lanterns series during the [DC Studios] presentation. Since I already have the series going in the right visual direction, how about hiring me to direct an episode?”

Aside from Hardman, the Green Lantern graphic novels were co-created by Corinna Bechko and are part of DC's line of Earth One graphic novel that began in 2009. The first volume released was in 2018, followed two years later by the second volume. The story follows the early adventures of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, adding a new continuity. This world's version of Hal, for example, is an astronaut who finds a power ring while on a deep space mining mission rather than being a pilot.

A Green Lantern live-action TV adaptation has always been part of the plans at HBO Max, given that the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds underperformed in its reception. In 2020, Seth Grahame-Smith was announced to serve as showrunner-writer and had already written a full eight-episode season of TV, only to depart from the project because of Warner Bros., HBO Max, and DC Comics company negotiations. The show received redevelopment progress in October 2022, following Gunn and Safran assuming their positions at the studios.

In the announcement of DC Studio's co-chairs, they described the direction in which the Lanterns series will go. "It is more of a True Detective-type mystery with our two lanterns. [A] terrestrial-based mystery," explained Safran, with Gunn continuing by saying that this series "leads into the overall story that we're telling throughout the different, different movies and television shows." And we find this ancient horror on Earth. And these guys are, you know, super cops on precinct Earth."

DC’s Lanterns series has yet to have its release date and ensemble.
