Gotham’s Jerome Returns to Pave the Way Towards The Joker

Everyone knows that Cameron Monaghan's role in Gotham is a very defining one. Even when we're not yet sure it's him, the moment that laugh rang through the night, we all collectively knew: it a grand reference to the Clown Prince of Crime.

With his imminent return in season 3, it looks like Jerome will build on towards the proverbial smile and create a bigger impression in the world. Speaking to Screener TV, Executive Producer John Stephens revealed just what will happen when Jerome returns. And what's more, what will happen with Bruce when he faces off with his future nemesis.

"[Bruce] really gets pulled into the Jerome story full-tilt. We really see a big step that he takes, another chink in the Batman philosophy, another brick in that wall gets built, in episode 14—and it gets built via Jerome. And Jerome will really be standing in for the person we know probably is out there. To us, it's very significant that that guy ends up informing this part of the Batman mythology."

From the looks of it, Jerome may still be more of a prototype to the Joker than the actual person incarnated. While he perfected the smile and the laugh, the producers seem to be readying the way for the bigger actual person—unless Monaghan actually turns out to be him. Whatever the case, Gotham will surely pack a lot of menace thanks to this resurrection.

Gotham airs Mondays on FOX, returning this Jan. 16 after the break for a three-episode run, and a spring return in April.
