GOTG Director James Gunn’s Firing Hasn’t Changed Disney’s Social Media Checks

It's hard to forget the entire hullabaloo surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn last year. An alt right extremist dug up some of the Marvel director's old tweets, starting a smear campaign that eventually cost Gunn's career in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite the fact that the insensitive and offensive tweets were made fourteen years in the past and were long-since apologized for, some fans felt outraged by Gunn's posts. Swayed by the backlash, Disney decided to fire Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and from the MCU.

However, despite the tumultuous incident, it seems like Gunn's firing hasn't changed Disney's methods in screening employee's social media accounts.

Disney Film Chief Alan Horn just recently went on an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about the upcoming Fox acquisition, Disney's Star Wars projects, and Pixar after John Lasseter's resignation. During the discussion, Horn opened up about Gunn's firing, speaking of the circumstances surrounding Disney's decision.

Horn also discussed what's been happening at Disney after Gunn's firing, saying that little has changed at the studio.

"I would say no. I don't think we do extensive background checks to see what a person has said. I feel sad for some of the people ensnared in all of this," the Disney exec explained. "And sometimes I feel like, 'Wow, what they said is so outrageous that it must have occurred to them that it would have repercussions.' It's a very open world now, and this stuff is a matter of record. The admonition is: Be careful."

It's been months since Gunn's firing, yet Disney's decision to let Gunn go has continued to be a topic of debate in the media and entertainment industry. It's ironic though that Disney hasn't been doing anything active after taking such drastic measures over Gunn's tweets.
