Game of Thrones is set to return with its eighth and final season later this weekend, but before the fantasy epic makes its come back, Bronn actor Jerome Flynn has an important message for fans.
Ever since Game of Thrones introduced direwolves during the first season of the series, fans have been buying huskies left and right all because they look a lot like the mythical canines that symbolize the Stark family. The only problem is that more often than not, these fans end up dumping these poor huskies or sending them to shelters because they are ill-equipped to handle the needs of the dogs. Dog pounds and shelters have noticed a surge in husky abandonment ever since the first season of Game of Thrones.
Together with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), Flynn urges fans to reconsider their decision in purchasing huskies – or at least think it over carefully.
"If you're a fan of the show, you're also likely to be a fan of the direwolves. Sadly, their popularity has sparked an alarming trend. More and more huskies are being bred and bought because of their resemblance to direwolves. I'm here today to urge you not to give into this temptation," Flynn shared in a video for PETA. "While people may have good intentions, acquiring dogs on a whim has dire consequences. Animal shelters around the world are reporting a surge in the number of abandoned huskies because the casual acquirer, drawn to the dog's appearance, failed to take into consideration the amount of time, patience, and money required to care for these animals properly."
It's heartbreaking to hear these reports of husky abandonment. Imagine taking in a dog that's supposed to be loved and cared for, only to, later on, abandon it because it doesn't really fit your lifestyle or your home. Adopting dogs should be thought of carefully – taking on a new pet ought to be a commitment, not just a passing whim.
Game of Thrones returns with Season 8 on April 14.
