Good Omens: Benedict Cumberbatch and Frances McDormand Not Returning for Season 2

Good Omens is making its return for a second season which had a lot of fans excited as they thought that the series was a one-off. Michael Sheen and David Tennant are set to reprise their roles as Aziraphale and Crowley respectively as well as several cast members from the first season. But as it turns out, there are two key cast members who won't be continuing their adventure.

Deadline has reported that Benedict Cumberbatch and Frances McDormand, who voiced Satan and God respectively during the first season, won't be returning in the second season. There is no reason stated why they won't be coming back nor if their roles will be recast.

However, Derek Jacobi, who voiced Metatron, will be returning in the second season as well as Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith, and Niamh Walsh while Siân Phillips, Tim Downie, Pete Firman, Andi Osho, and Alex Norton will be joining the cast of the second season.

The new installment will explore storylines that go beyond the Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett novel to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale, a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley. Having been on Earth since The Beginning, and with the Apocalypse thwarted, Aziraphale and Crowley are getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.

"We are so thrilled that we were able to get so many fabulous actors to return to the Good Omens family," Gaiman said in a statement. "Some of them are reprising roles, some of them are playing completely new characters. And we are just as thrilled by the people coming to the Good Omens team for the first time. We have an ensemble cast of astonishing talent, and seeing what they’re giving us is a daily treat. I can’t wait until the rest of the world gets that treat, too."

It is unfortunate to hear that Cumberbatch and McDormand won't be returning in the second season, especially the latter since she was the voice of God who is very prominent in the story of the series. Perhaps they won't be appearing in the second season or they will be recast with new actors. We will find out soon enough on that. But fortunately, other supporting cast members from the first season will be returning and it will be exciting to see their characters again.
