While fans are still eagerly awaiting the show’s first trailer, Going Merry in the One Piece live-action series has been revealed, though Japanese fans are not happy with the design.

Merry is the first ship of Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew, and while they may have changed to their current ship Thousand Sunny, Merry still holds a place in many fans’ hearts.

Because of this, it’s no surprise that the change in look for Going Merry isn’t something that many fans are taking kindly to.

Previously, several manga leakers shared what seems to be a proper look at Going Merry in Netflix’s live-action One Piece series. Soon, the leaks turned out to be true.

A few days ago, the official One Piece Twitter account shared the new visual of Merry in the upcoming series, and while it incorporates most of the designs in the manga, its bow features a more realistic design.

In the anime and the manga, Merry has a face on the bow that looks like a ram.

For the live-action show, the ram now has a realistic look that might take some time to get used to, especially given how cute the original looked.

It’s interesting that the show went for this different look, especially considering how accurate the original costumes for the main cast are based on the key visual.

And while this is the first proper look at Merry, a previous behind-the-scenes video featured a peek at the concept art, which is quite close to the final design.

Unsurprisingly, many fans expressed their disappointment with the design. In Japan especially, many fans don’t like the design at all, calling it creepy and ugly.

While the official tweet deactivated replies, other Twitter threads featured Japanese fans sharing their criticisms.

There were even fans who said that Merry looks like Emil from the NieR series, among other scathing remarks.

Meanwhile, over in the West, there seems to be a mixed reaction.

While some are just as disappointed as many fans in Japan, some like this new look for Merry and are still cautiously optimistic about the show’s quality.

The One Piece live-action show will be released on Netflix sometime in 2023. Though there’s no word yet on a specific release date or release window for now.
