After a year since the first season’s broadcast, Girlfriend, Girlfriend Season 2 was announced, with the upcoming season heading into the production phase soon.
The announcement of the second season of Girlfriend, Girlfriend (Kanojo mo Kanojo in Japanese) was made via the show’s official website and the author's Twitter account. There, it was revealed that production of the anime has been green-lit.
To accompany the announcement, a new visual for the next season was shared online.
This new visual echoes the key visual of the first season as it features Saki Saki, Nagisa Minase, Rika Hoshizaki, and Shino Kiryu in their school uniforms, albeit in different poses.
In case you’re unfamiliar, Girlfriend, Girlfriend or Kanojo mo Kanojo is an anime series by Tezuka Productions that’s based on the manga of the same name by Hiroyuki. The ongoing manga began serialization in March 2020 in Weekly Shonen Magazine.
The series’ story follows protagonist Naoya Mukai who recently got into a relationship with his childhood friend, Saki Saki.
Naoya has been confessing to Saki for a long time now, and because of his successful confession, Naoya decides to shower his girlfriend with affection.
Soon though, another girl named Nagisa Minase confesses her feelings to Naoya. While he initially rejects her, he gets smitten with her as well.
Because of this, he decides to date them simultaneously, with both girls knowing. As Naoya lives alone because of his parents’ work, Saki and Nagisa then decide to live with him. Thus begins their unlikely love triangle relationship.

The second season sees several returning staff members, including director Satoshi Kuwabara (director of The Quintessential Quintuplets) with Keiichiro Ochi in charge of series composition.
Joining them is Akiko Toyoda as the chief animation director, as well as Kazuhiko Inukai and Mayumi Morita who return to write the scripts.
As for the cast, the second season also sees the Season 1 voice actors return, including:
- Ayane Sakura as Saki Saki
- Azumi Waki as Nagisa Minase
- Rie Takahashi as Shino Kiryu
- Ayana Taketatsu as Rika Hoshizaki
- Junya Enoki as Naoya Mukai
Right now though, there’s no word yet on a release date for Girlfriend, Girlfriend Season 2.
