Ghostbusters Star Confirms Absence in Afterlife Sequel

Following the unexpected huge success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife back in 2021, production is now underway for the sequel that is set to release later this year. This time around, the film will be returning to its original roots in Manhattan, the setting of the 80s movies.

So far, we know that the new generation of characters that were introduced in Afterlife will be returning. Ernie Hudson remains to be the only legacy cast member that is confirmed to appear so far as there are no details yet regarding the others.

Now, we have a word regarding one of the legacy cast members who is not confirmed to be part of the upcoming film.

Sigourney Weaver, who played Dana Barrett in the first three films, revealed in an interview with Collider that she won't be part of the Afterlife sequel.

"No, I mean, I wasn't asked to be in this Ghostbusters, and I think, you know, a little of us goes a long way," she said.

The Oscar-nominated actress has always been a staple of the original Ghostbusters films in the 80s. In Afterlife, she only showed up during the mid-credits scene where she is seen still happily living with Peter Venkman.

There is no confirmation yet about the status of the other legacy cast members in the upcoming film, Hudson seemingly hinted in a recent interview with The Film Collective that Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Annie Potts are returning to the sequel.

He said, "It’s great to be back with Danny and Bill and Annie Potts and the new cast. It’s been forty years, it just feels like family."

Set photos from the film have also revealed that William Atherton, who played Walter Peck in the original, will also be part of the sequel.

It is disappointing to hear that Weaver won't be returning to the new film since it would have been obviously great if she'll have a bigger role in the sequel. Perhaps they can't find a way to put Dana in the story or she wasn't available to film her scenes.

As Hudson teased, we will still be getting a dose of our favorite legacy cast members from the new film. Who knows, maybe Weaver will appear instead in the third movie.
