- Quick Answer: Sony is reportedly developing a Christmas-themed Ghostbusters movie titled Nightmare on 34th Street, written by Sonic writer Josh Miller.
For the first time in Ghostbusters history, a new Christmas-themed live-action horror movie could be coming, with Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street reportedly in development at Sony.
Sure, the 1989 sequel Ghostbusters II was set during the holiday season and culminated on New Year’s Eve, but it wasn’t specifically a Christmas-themed film.
So, could Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street be a reboot or even a full-on Christmas horror movie?
What Is the New Ghostbusters Film About?
In a report by Daniel RPK (via ComicBook), the new Ghostbusters film is set to be written by Sonic the Hedgehog writer Josh Miller.
While details about Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street remain under wraps, there seems to be a hint that it could be a reboot with a holiday setting or theme.
With its title, Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street seems to be a play on the title of the iconic holiday classic Miracle on 34th Street, only with something frightening potentially happening.
The original Christmas-themed movie debuted in 1947 and became a much-loved holiday classic.
It follows a man named Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn), who gets hired to play Santa at Macy’s after the Thanksgiving Day parade. But as he insists that he’s the real Father Christmas, his sanity and identity are questioned in court.
Miracle on 34th Street has been remade and adapted since, and it looks like it’s about to inspire a horror movie in the upcoming Nightmare on 34th Street.
Does Ghostbusters Have a Christmas-Themed Movie?
While the franchise’s Ghostbusters II is set during the holiday season, with the events escalating on New Year’s Eve in New York, it’s not exactly a Christmas-themed movie. It's actually deemed a New Year movie.
Sure, it gave viewers a “spooky Christmas” experience, but it’s still not the same as other Christmas movies featuring ghost stories.
It’s also worth noting that the sequel was poorly received, getting generally negative reviews and failing to replicate the cultural impact and following of the original film.
It was also seen as responsible for stalling the franchise for decades, with the Ghostbusters reboot happening in 2016 and the sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife releasing in 2021.
That said, Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street may be the franchise’s chance to feature a real Christmas-themed movie that could be loved by viewers.
