Ghostbusters Animated Movie Officially In Development

The huge success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife late last year paved the way for Sony to expand the franchise even further as they are working on another sequel and confirmed to be developing an animated series for Netflix. As it turns out, the franchise is now also making its way to animation on the big screen.

According to Deadline, during the annual Ghostbusters Day, Sony announced that they are working on a Ghostbusters animated film under the production of Sony Pictures Animation. Afterlife writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are producing the film. Chris Prynoski and Jennifer Kluska are tapped to direct with Brenda Hsueh writing the screenplay.

There are no plot details revealed yet for the animated feature project whether it will be connected to the Netflix animated series that they just announced, but it is expected to feature new characters. It is also unknown yet if it will be set in the same universe as the live-action films.

"This was a passion project of my father’s and it’s easy to understand why. The world of the unknown can only be properly explored through the limitless reach of animation," Reitman said in a statement that was released during the announcement of the project.

It looks like Sony is going all the way on expanding the Ghostbusters franchise with their numerous announcements during Ghostbusters Day. An animated feature project is an interesting venture for them to get in and it's curious to see what kind of story they have in store for the film and whether they are going to connect it to the original films or set in a separate universe of its own.
