Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel Sets New Director, Main Cast Confirmed to Return

Following the smashing success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife last year, Sony immediately moved forward with a sequel that will see them continue the story of the new generation of Ghostbusters. As pre-production is currently underway for the film, it looks like it will also have some major behind-the-scenes changes as a new director has been tapped to helm the follow-up.

Deadline has confirmed that Gil Kenan, who co-wrote and executive produced Afterlife, is now set to direct the sequel as he takes over the reins from Jason Reitman, who will still be involved in a writer-producer capacity.

"It’s an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga," Kenan said in a statement. "I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film."

In addition, the main cast from the previous film including Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon are also on board to return. Production is scheduled to begin at the beginning of next year as casting is currently underway for the new roles.

There are no details yet regarding the plot of the sequel although it is expected to take place in New York City just like the first two original films. As hinted by Afterlife's post-credits scene, it is also likely that they will return to the iconic firehouse with the possibility of our favorite legacy characters coming back as well.

It is interesting to hear that the sequel will have a different director since there have been assumptions that Reitman will continue the role. However, Kenan is also an experienced filmmaker himself and even received an Oscar nomination for his work in Monster House. The film is still in good hands under his wings and it's curious to see what his take will look like.
