George R.R. Martin’s Nightflyers Series Axed After Its First Season On Syfy

Game of Thrones might be a massively successful live-action series, but as it turns out not everything that comes from George R.R. Martin really works on the small screen. Nightflyers, Syfy's psychological thrill series based on Martin's novella of the same name has just been canceled after only one season on the network.

Speaking in an interview with Deadline, a representative of Syfy confirms Nightflyer's cancellation, saying that the network decided to pull the plug on the show after the ten episodes of the series first season failed to draw in good ratings.

Featuring the talent of Eoin Macken, David Ajala, and Maya Eshet, Nightflyers takes viewers to the distant future of the year 2093. The series follows the story of a group of scientists trying to find and befriend different alien life forms. However, trouble soon arises when the crew of the Nightflyer ship starts turning on each other in a series of violent events when the team realizes that they aren't flying across space alone – a premise that reminds many of The Thing and Dark Matter.

The series originally showed such great promise, not only because of its premise but because of Martin's name attached to the project. Aside from that, but the series had thriller genre powerhouses writing and executive producing the project. This includes Jeff Buhler from Pet Sematary, Gene Klein from Suits and Brian Nelson from 30 Days of Night.

Despite all these, the series failed to take off as Syfy hoped. Now, the series has been officially canceled with members of the show's cast moving on to other projects.
