George R.R. Martin Suggests a Title for a Game of Thrones Prequel

Game of Thrones is set to end sometime next year, and HBO has been rumored to be working on a spinoff series to keep everyone in Westeros for a while longer. Author George R.R. Martin gives his suggestion of what the show could be called and when it could be set in the GoT timeline.

On his website, Martin wrote:

This one really puts the PRE in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before GAME OF THRONES (like Dunk & Egg), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long). We're very early in the process, of course, with the pilot order just in, so we don't have a director yet, or a cast, or a location, or even a title. (My vote would be THE LONG NIGHT, which says it all, but I'd be surprised if that's where we end up. More likely HBO will want to work the phrase "game of thrones" in there somewhere.)

While Martin may have a point that HBO might want the Game of Thrones title somewhere, I think it would be a better move to brand it as its own show. Better Call Saul is probably one of the best spinoffs to ever make it to television, and it didn't even need Breaking Bad in its title to be a hit.

I am intrigued at the concept of a massive time jump for the prequel. Though some may want to see more about Rhaeger Targaryen and Robert's Rebellion, I think having it set ten thousand years into the past could make for some interesting stories.

The Game of Thrones spinoff has not yet been officially announced.
