George R.R. Martin Says His Littlefinger Would Have Never Betrayed Sansa

Though Littlefinger's execution in Game of Thrones was a pretty cool twist, a lot of fans thought that it was out of character for Petyr Baelish to betray Sansa. What's interesting is, even author George R.R. Martin thought so.

In the Game of Thrones tell-all book Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon (via Insider), Martin reveals that his version of Littlefinger would have never given Sansa up to the Boltons. He says:

"My Littlefinger would have never turned Sansa over to Ramsay. Never. He's obsessed with her. Half the time he thinks she's the daughter he never had — that he wishes he had, if he'd married Catelyn. And half the time he thinks she is Catelyn, and he wants her for himself… He's not going to give her to somebody who would do bad things to her. That's going to be very different in the books."

So far, the books still have Petyr as Lord of the Eyrie, and Sansa is still with him. We don't know how Martin is choosing to end Littlefinger's story, but hopefully it would be something closer to his character. While he does love Sansa, let's note that Petyr is still the reason this whole war ever happened. Hopefully there's a much more grandiose ending for the architect of the War of the Five Kings.

For now, everyone is still waiting on George R.R. Martin to finish the Winds of Winter, and while it was expected to be available sometime within the year, it looks like Martin is not really close to finishing the book at all. The best we can do is really just distract ourselves with something else, and maybe in a few years, Martin will finally finish the second to the last book of the series.

The Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon is set to come out sometime in 2022 on HBO.
