Game of Thrones fans might have come to terms with the fact that the next season is going to be the last season for HBO's smash hit fantasy epic, but George R.R. Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, isn't really sure why the series is coming to an end so soon.
Martin just recently attended this year's Emmy Awards, and the high fantasy, horror, and science fiction novelist got to speak with Variety about Game of Thrones. When asked by the publication why the series was coming to an end, Martin lobbied the question by telling Variety's interviewer to ask David Benioff and D.B. Weiss the question instead, saying that the television adaptation of his books could have gone on even longer.
According to Martin, Game of Thrones could have probably lasted up to 13 seasons on HBO, and he was hoping that the series would reach at least season 10. Unfortunately, according to the novelist, it seems like the showrunners might have "wanted a life."
Martin definitely has a point with having 10 seasons of Game of Thrones. Some of the fanbase's biggest complaints with the last few batches of episodes of the fantasy epic are the rushed plotlines and all the instant travel – two different devices that the showrunners have used to develop a sense of urgency and heighten the drama of the series.
However, while it definitely is disheartening to see Game of Thrones come to an end next year, fans aren't that heartbroken. After all, there's still that Game of Thrones prequel series to look forward to.
Game of Thrones is set to return with its eighth season on HBO sometime 2019.
