George R.R. Martin Reveals The Inspiration Behind Game Of Thrones

It seems like the whole world is already aware of the Game of Thrones plot where several rulers are fighting to take on the Iron Throne. But how exactly did George R.R. Martin come up with the complicated storyline in the first place? The A Song of Ice and Fire author has revealed that it started during his childhood and involved two competing turtles.

Martin was recently a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The writer, who was wearing a purple turtle brooch, immediately admitted that he loves turtles and that the tiny creatures were the first inspiration that led to A Song of Ice and Fire.

According to Martin, he had a toy castle that became the home of several little turtles. However, the turtles kept dying one by one no matter how careful he was in taking care of them. Martin then stated that he imagined that the turtles were actually killing each other as they competed for the castle's throne and hence become "the turtle king."

"That was my first fantasy: Turtle Castle. It preceded Game of Thrones by many years," Martin revealed.

Colbert then joked that he is looking forward to the novel Turtle Castle. Not surprisingly, Martin responded that he would need to work on The Winds of Winter next and the turtle book would have to wait or else the fans would be very upset.

The author actually made an appearance on The Late Show to promote his latest novel Fire and Blood. Although the project is a welcome one, it also had fans very concerned about the future of The Winds of Winter. Nevertheless, Martin promises that he is focusing on the sixth book of the ASOIAF series.

The Game of Thrones creator has previously admitted that he is "struggling" to finish The Winds of Winter because of the sheer number of characters. We're certainly hoping that Martin will manage to finish the novel and publish it soon.

Fire and Blood was released earlier this week. Game of Thrones Season 8 is set to premiere on HBO in April 2019.
