Star Wars: The Last Jedi saw Luke Skywalker go out on his own terms after his sacrificial and heroic death following his showdown with Kylo Ren during the film's final sequences in Crait. That decision, which doesn't really come as a surprise anymore when you think about it now was actually the brainchild of director Rian Johnson who helmed the divisive 2017 blockbuster. However, what may come as an enormous surprise to a lot of people is the fact that in George Lucas' version of the sequel trilogy, he also intended to write off the Jedi master in Episode VIII. Whoa.

According to the book Star Wars: Fascinating Facts (via Star Wars News Net) Lucas' vision of the eighth chapter indeed called for the death of the legendary character. On page 140 of the said book, it is said that Luke's faith has already been set in stone years before Johnson took on the directorial duties for The Last Jedi. It was quite unclear though how Skywalker would've died in Lucas' version but knowing him, he would've probably given Mark Hamill's character the proper send-off he so rightfully deserves.

Now, this astonishing revelation which comes years after we originally saw The Last Jedi begs the question, did Rian actually have a hint of what George had planned, or was it purely coincidental? Maybe that's just how the Force works. We may never truly know the answer for sure but it's mind-blowing to think that both George and Rian actually shared the same vision for the franchise even though their work in the Star Wars universe has raised a lot of eyebrows over the years. Still, it's an interesting bit of information we all deserved to know.
