Gene Roddenberry's Son Shares Thoughts on Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek Film

Let's face it: Quentin Tarantino is the last person anybody expected would have any interest in working on a Star Trek movie. Although the Pulp Fiction director isn't actually going to helm the project, he had written the screenplay for a film that is inspired by the gangster-themed episode from The Original Series.

But is everyone actually enthusiastic about the idea? Gene Roddenberry's son has shared his thoughts on the strange movie.

It's no secret that Tarantino has plans for a Star Trek film that pays tribute to the TOS episode A Piece of the Action. The episode is one of the more unusual ones for the show as it follows the Enterprise crew as they end up on a planet that has patterned itself after the 1920's Chicago gangs.

Roddenberry has learned about Tarantino's project and he told Forbes that it isn't exactly something he would consider.

"I struggle with that because the way I'm pretty myopic with the way I see Star Trek," Roddenberry said. "I mentioned that I grew up with fans coming up to me out saying how Star Trek inspired them and gave them hope for the future. It's the optimism and the messaging in there that make Star Trek what it was. I truly believe that."

Roddenberry continued by stating that he is determined to understand Tarantino's plans for the project.

"If you create a Star Trek, that is just action; that is not Star Trek, in my opinion. That's what makes it different than Star Wars, and I love Star Wars, but they can both coexist. And I love Tarantino's work and the kind of films that he does. I am trying to have an open mind," Roddenberry said.

It's great to know that the younger Roddenberry is working at being open-minded about the unusual pitch. However, it's important to remember that Paramount Pictures has not yet green-lighted Tarantino's project. After all, the studio has a few other Star Trek projects to consider so it may take some time before we get to see this one.

A new Star Trek movie is expected to be officially announced in the next few months. Will it be the Tarantino gangster-themed project? Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
