Gaslit Season 1 Episode 1 tells the lesser-known stories surrounding the Watergate scandal. Julia Roberts plays Arkansian socialite Martha Mitchell in the Starz series, which is based on a true story.

Gaslit Season 1 Episode 1 introduces the ‘Mouth of the South’

In Gaslit Season 1 Episode, we first see Martha Mitchell on a game show, where the host introduces her as the "Mouth of the South." John Dean (Dan Stevens) is finishing up a one-night stand with a girl when the game show comes on TV when John's date discovers that he works for President Richard Nixon’s Attorney General, John Mitchell (Sean Penn).

Later that day, Mitchell summons John and another assistant called Jeb Magruder (Hamish Linklater) to his office. Mitchell and Magruder explain to John that they want him to obtain information about the Democratic Party to help Nixon win re-election. John first declines the offer, fearful of the implications, but Mitchell subtly reveals that Nixon personally requested John. John changes his mind and instructs the men to call G. Gordon Liddy (Shea Whigham).

Gaslit Season 1 Episode 1 sees Martha Mitchell make a late-night phone call

Mitchell returns home to find Martha doing yet another interview, despite Mitchell's attempts to stop her. It's "just the Ladies Home Journal" this time, but that doesn't matter. Mitchell evicts Winnie, the reporter, from their home.

John arranges a meeting with Liddy and Mitchell so that Liddy could outline his idea for acquiring the Democratic Party information. The idea, however, incorporates kidnapping and prostitution, immediately branding Liddy as a loony.

Martha and her husband later attend a fundraiser for President Nixon in Gaslit Season 1 Episode 1. Martha realizes she's sitting at a table in the back and suspects it's the fault of Pat Nixon. The two women dislike each other.

As a group of singers take the stage, one of them pulls out a cloth with the words "Stop the killing" printed across the front. The woman criticizes President Nixon's conduct in the Vietnam War, which Martha has previously expressed her opposition to in interviews. The woman is quickly escorted out of the venue by security agents.

Martha contacts Winnie in the middle of the night after returning home from the fundraiser later that night. Martha informs her about the protester, but then casually discusses Nixon's and Henry Kissinger's simmering feud.
