There were a lot of epic moments in the latest episode of Game of Thrones Season 8. After all, there had already been a lot of hype about the Battle of Winterfell and fans were expecting to be completely blown away. However, there was one moment that people didn't expect and it belonged to the Red Woman.
WARNING: Spoilers ahead, turn back now if you haven't seen Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3!
In The Long Night, Melisandre arrived at Winterfell and somehow helped with a lot of things. She made sure the Dothraki's weapons were lit with fire and she repeated the feat (with some difficulty) in making sure the trench had its flames. However, it was the final moment when the war was over that truly surprised viewers. The Red Woman walked out of the gates, removed her necklace, and finally died right before dawn, as she had told Davos Seaworth earlier.
Melisandre's death was indeed surprising since everyone was probably hoping that Davos would get some revenge for what she did to Shireen Baratheon. Interestingly, Carice van Houten has revealed to Collider that Liam Cunningham was somehow unhappy with what happened to the witch.
"He was one of the first people that sent me a message actually after the show aired and he said, ‘Great performance. Sorry I didn't get to kill you,'" van Houten said.
It's just a joke, of course. After all, the two have worked together on Game of Thrones for so long and have understandably bonded. Van Houten admitted that she "just laughed" when she got the text because it was something she would expect from Cunningham.
"I just thought it was so typical for him to write that. I couldn't have been more lucky with him as a co-actor all those years," she said.
We're certainly going to miss Melisandre on the show. Thank you, Red Woman, for helping provide some light in a truly dark episode.
