Game of Thrones Showrunners React To Season 7 Finale Major Character Death

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the final episode of the seventh season of Game of Thrones.

There was a lot going on in Game of Thrones Season 7 finale. Not only did fans of HBO's massively popular fantasy epic gather together the series' most important players in the Dragonpit at Kings Landing, it also saw the end of the sly and treacherous Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen).

Pitting Sansa (Sophie Turner) against her sister Arya (Maisie Williams) didn't do so well for Littlefinger and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss both praise Gillen's performance.

"It was one of the harder death calls we had to make. Relatively speaking, he's a minor character if you look at his screen time. The fact that Littlefinger looms so large when people talk about the show, and when we think about the show, it's really a credit to Aidan. Every scene he's in manages to make you think about Littlefinger. And when he's at the center of a scene — like his final scene in the finale — he's completely mesmerizing. We've had a lot of death scenes on this show and this is one of the great ones. Diana Rigg [as Olenna Tyrell] was so true to her character in the end, and Littlefinger was so true to his character — in his own cowardly, horrible way," Benioff says.

Weiss comments on Gillan's work as Littlefinger also echoes his Game of Thrones co-producer, saying that not only was there a "beautiful strangeness to his performance" but also that he's been really happy with "his last performance on the show."

Such a shame we won't be seeing the master of chaos climbing up any ladders anymore in Game of Thrones. We were sort of expecting Littlefinger to stay a while longer.

Game of Thrones season 8 hits sometime 2018 or 2019.
