Game of Thrones Iron Throne Reveal Was Always George R.R. Martin's Plan

After the divisive Game of Thrones finale, fans who weren't happy about how showrunner David Benioff and D.B. Weiss ended the series could only hope that George R.R. Martin, who wrote the masterpiece in which the show is based, will give them something so much better. Unfortunately, it looks like what the bestselling author has in mind isn't far from D&D's vision.

One of the most polarizing things about the series finale is why Jon Snow seems to have received the shorter end of the stick. Many people were convinced that he was supposed to be the one to get the Iron Throne. Of course, as fans know, it was Bran who got it in the end.

According to actor Isaac Hempstead Wright who played Bran on Game of Thrones, he was told that this was the ending of the character Martin always planned, at least according to Benioff and Weiss.

"David and Dan told me there were two things George R.R. Martin had planned for Bran, and that was the Hodor revelation, and that he would be king. So that's pretty special to be directly involved in something that is part of George's vision. It was a really nice way to wrap it up," he said in Making Game of Thrones as he recalled the first time he learned about his character's fate.

It was only at this point that Wright finally believed that it is indeed how it's going down. When he was first told about it, he thought that Benioff and Weiss were joking and that it was "the very last thing I expected to happen."

"I was convinced they had sent a script to everyone in which they become king or queen, so I still didn't believe it until the read-through," he said.

The actor then reflected on it and was convinced that it actually makes a lot of sense that Game of Thrones concluded with him on the throne.

"I think he is a great character to take on that role. You never thought of him in that way, but what more could you ask for in a king than to have no personal attachments, no agenda, but have a calm understanding of the entire universe? He's the ideal person to be in charge," the actor said.

Martin has said that his ending for A Song of Ice and Fire indeed isn't far off from how the Game of Thrones ended. Despite the backlash, it is looking like he will stick to it.
