David Benioff and D.B. Weiss might be behind the live-action adaptation of Game of Thrones, but the mind behind the original source material of the series is George R.R. Martin, the author of the highly successful A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Aside from penning his novels, Martin has also been an active participant of the phenomenal HBO series, working hands-on on the show as a writer, producer, and consultant.
Now that the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is finally here, Martin talks about the end. Speaking in an interview with the Rolling Stone, the writer admits that the end seems bittersweet.
"You know, it's complex," Martin says. "I'm a little sad, actually. I wish we had a few more seasons. But I understand. [Showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss] are gonna go on to do other things, and I'm sure some of the actors were signed up for like seven or eight years, and they would like to go on and take other roles. All of that is fair. I'm not angry or anything like that, but there's a little wistfulness in me."
It is bittersweet. Fans are going to have to part ways with characters that they've come to love and admire after a measly eight seasons on HBO. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that fans will have to say goodbye to Westeros. After all, HBO is preparing a few prequel series to help with the Game of Thrones withdrawal that everyone will experience once the show finally comes to an end.
Game of Thrones Season 8 airs every Sunday at 9 pm ET on HBO.
