How long can you keep a secret? Emilia Clarke had to keep a big one, and it certainly paid off. The Game of Thrones actress has just admitted that she knew about the epic Daenerys Targaryen plot twist in Season 8 for about two years. Luckily, she was able to keep quiet about it until the premiere on the fifth episode.
Clarke recently attended The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Stop MS fundraising appeal in London (via The Standard). Interestingly, the Solo: A Star Wars Story actress admitted she knew people will end up hating Daenerys back in 2017.
"People have always come up to me and told me how much they love Daenerys. And two years ago I got the script for this series and knew what was going to happen to her," Clarke confessed. "Every time someone would come up to me and say, ‘I love her!' inside, I was thinking, ‘Well you're not going to love her for long!'"
It's certainly an interesting statement from the actress who plays the Mother of Dragons. Nevertheless, Clarke revealed she had to keep quiet about the plot twist for two long years.
"It was so hard to keep it a secret. I would just nod and smile, and that's why I had this sort of furrowed-eyebrow expression a lot of the time. My eyebrows would sort of curl up," she said.
But how does Clarke feel now that the final season is experiencing major backlash over Dany's Mad Queen moment? The Terminator: Genisys star chose not to comment on negativity.
"The response in general to this series has been pretty overwhelming. It's been an incredible privilege to be part of," Clarke said.
Love it or hate it, Daenerys seemed to be destined to go a little mad in Game of Thrones. Now fans can only hope that the series finale will give the character a conclusion she truly deserves.
The final episode of Game of Thrones Season 8 will air on HBO on May 19.
