Game of Thrones was huge, there's no question in that, and it is all thanks to George R.R. Martin who penned A Song of Ice and Fire where the iconic series is based on. Now, one of his early works is getting an animated film under Warner Bros. Animation, and George R.R. Martin confirmed it himself.

In an interview for his promotion with Penguin Random House, George R.R. Martin shared about The Ice Dragon, a lore beyond that of Westeros, "I occasionally wrote other books that were not part of Westeros or that. One of them that I wrote way back in 1978 was a short story about a dragon, an ice dragon, and it's called The Ice Dragon. Just a short story, as I said."

George R.R. Martin personally revealed that The Ice Dragon will have its own film adaptation, "It's primarily a kid's story, but we are going to make that. Warner Bros. Animation has purchased the rights to it, and we're going to expand it to a fully animated film..."

"A theatrical film, we hope, to be released in a motion picture palace near you, and David Anthony Durham will be writing the screenplay. And he better do a good job!," George R.R. Martin added, looking forward to what David Anthony Durham will bring into the screenplay of the movie.

In the same interview, George R.R. Martin expressed his sentiments on the adaptations from books to any project onscreen, may it be series or movies. He calls onto the producers to be faithful to the source material and not create their own versions when it comes to the adaptations.

The author's perspective comes from his collaboration with the showrunners of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss considering that George R.R. Martin closely worked with them on the series from the start but by the fifth season, he was taken out of the loop in the direction of the show.

By the time the House of Dragon was under production, while George R.R. Martin didn't get all the control to the show, there is a more collaborative contribution from him with the showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.

There is no release date yet for The Ice Dragon, the project is still in early development.
