Gambit Producer Simon Kinberg Says Fox Is Still Trying To Get Film Running

X-Men fans might have little faith in the 21st Century Fox's promised Gambit spinoff, but producer Simon Kinberg tells fans that the Ragin Cajun's still making his way to the big screen.

Even though Gambit's been repeatedly delayed, Kinberg tells Entertainment Weekly that Fox still hasn't given up on the X-Men spinoff.

"Believe it or not," the X-Men: Dark Phoenix director said during the interview with the publication. "we're still trying to get Gambit up and running."

Though the studio is expecting the Disney and Fox merger to alter the plans the studio has for the X-Men franchise, Kinberg says Gambit is still moving forward as it would even without the acquisition.

"We haven't had any discussions yet about what the Disney acquisition of Fox would look like for the Marvel properties because I think legally they're not allowed to talk about it until it's done. So no we haven't talked about it at all. We're just moving forward as we move forward," Kinberg explained. "I have no idea what to expect but I think it could be really exciting."

The Gambit spinoff has had troubles kicking off, losing directors at least three times (first Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and then Gore Verbinski) and then going throough one substantial rewrite. The only constant through it all has been Tatum, who remains attached to the titular role of the film.

Kinberg's optimism is reassuring. Though Gambit is still waiting for another director to pick up the project, the producer's comments certainly help assuage fan's anxiety over the film.

Gambit is set to premiere June 7, 2019.
