Paramount+ has announced that a new Galaxy Quest series is currently in development, much to the delight of fans of the 1999 cult classic science fiction comedy film.

Executive produced by Mark Johnson, the series is still in its early stages, with no concept or writer attached to the project as of yet. Despite the lack of details, the prospect of a Galaxy Quest series is undoubtedly an attractive one for Paramount+, given its success with the Star Trek spin-off series.

The Origins of Galaxy Quest

The film Galaxy Quest, released in 1999, stars a stellar cast of acting legends, including Sigourney Weaver, Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, and Sam Rockwell. The plot follows a group of washed-up actors from a beloved science fiction television series who are abducted by aliens in need of intergalactic help.

Though the movie was not a huge box office success at the time, it has since become a beloved cult classic, ahead of its time in many ways.

The Journey to a Spin-off Series

Plans for a Galaxy Quest series have been in the works for quite some time. The original concept involved bringing the original cast together for a continuation of the film's story.

However, the death of Alan Rickman in 2016 put those plans on hold. The project was initially planned for Amazon, but the new series is now set to debut on Paramount+. Previous iterations of the series involved creative input from Paul Scheer, Simon Pegg, and Georgia Prichett, but as of yet, no writer is attached to the current project.

What to Expect

Though there are no concrete details about the series yet, the prospect of a Galaxy Quest spin-off is undoubtedly exciting for fans of the original film. With its built-in fan base and established brand recognition, the series is a safer bet for Paramount+ than a purely original project.

While fans will have to wait a bit longer for more information, the fact that the Galaxy Quest series has been in the works for eight years indicates that it will be worth the wait.
