In 2018, Fortnite became a successful pop culture phenomenon and it looks like the popular online game developed by Epic Games made a whopping amount of money. According to SuperData's Year in Review, Fortnite made an estimated $2.4 billion in revenue last year and it was the top-grossing free-to-play game. Much of Fortnite's revenue comes from selling character emotes and skins. SuperData also reported that 34% of all US players also "regularly" bought a seasonal Battle Pass.

Free-to-play games as a whole earned $87.7 billion in 2018, accounting for 80% of the $109.8 billion digital games revenue last year.

Fortnite made significantly much more than other established free-to-play games like Pokemon Go ($1.1 billion), League of Legends ($1.4 billion), Candy Crush Saga ($1 billion) and Tencent's Honour of Kings (a.k.a. Arena of Valor in the West).
