Epic Games are the same people behind Unreal Engine and the insanely popular Fortnite, but news has come out that the developers are actually teaming up with Lucasfilm to try their hand on television.
As per Disney's official website, Epic Games and Lucasfilm are collaborating for a live-action series which some are guessing is Jon Favreau's upcoming The Mandalorian. Here's the official statement:
Epic Games, developers of Unreal Engine and Fortnight, is collaborating with Lucasfilm to bring the power of Epic's Unreal Engine real-time rendering to live-action production for the first time ever on a series for Disney's Direct-to-Consumer streaming service launching late next year.
Seeing that Mandalorian will be Star Wars' first foray into live-action series, it would make sense that they would try to push the bounds of visual effects to be better suited for television. If this collaboration succeeds, then maybe it wouldn't be as tedious to get some topnotch visual effects ready for the show.
As it stands, VFX for TV has always been harder to pull off, and without the proper amount of time allotted, they could end up pretty bad when the final product is aired. Game of Thrones had to delay production by a year just so they could meet production demands. I wouldn't expect anything less from something like Star Wars. I think it would be a travesty to brand your show as part of the Star Wars universe and not have some decent CGI in it.
Of course, it's possible that Epic is working on something else other than The Mandalorian, but with the production currently ongoing and no other live-action shows announced, what else could they be working on with Lucasfilm?
Star Wars: The Mandalorian has no specific release date, but it will launch alongside Disney's streaming service in 2019.
