First Official Trailer For Scream 5 Is Here

The first official trailer for Scream 5 is finally here, which comes a year after production wrapped late last year. The film has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now it looks like there's no stopping the brand-new Ghostface as he sets about laying waste to Woodsboro teens all over again.

Check out the brand-new trailer below which launched today:

As you can see, it's pretty action-packed, and we get to see the return of Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette, who are reprising their roles as Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley. For the fifth time these characters will be brought back into the fold to fight Ghostface - or perhaps more than one, which every film bar the third has done so far.

Newcomers include Sonia Ben Ammar, Kyle Gallner, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Dylan Minnette, and Mikey Madison, while Marley Shelton reprises her role as police officer Judy Hicks, who first appeared in Scream 4 (2011). Randy L. Jackson will also be returning as Ghostface, having appeared in all four movies to date.

The trailer opens just like any of the four previous films, with an unsuspecting character at home taking a call from a new Ghostface. And once again, technology seems to be playing a key role (every entry has played with the tech of its time), as the hapless victim battles with trying to keep her house locked via a mobile phone app (what ever happened to good old-fashioned padlocks?).

We then cut to Dewey, who wastes no time in calling Sidney. "It's happening, three texts so far," he says, cutting to the case. He then asks, "Do you have a gun?" to which Sidney replies, "I'm Sidney Prescott - of course, I have a gun." To no surprise, it seems Sidney is readily prepared for a new Ghostface to emerge at any moment - and who can blame her.

And just as you might wonder whether this film has anything new in-store, Dewey says, "Something about this one just feels different." Let's hope he's right - each entry in the series has served as 'meta' commentary. The first movie shone the light on slashers, the second deconstructed sequels, the third unpacked trilogies, while the fourth (tried) to analyze reboots.

But going by trailer, things are looking pretty traditional - which isn't a bad thing. For starters, Scream always offer up great entertainment, and secondly, it's more than likely the filmmakers are keeping the plot under wraps - which is no surprise considering that the identity of the killer or killers is the real selling point of these movies.

So it looks like the mask is the same - but Ghostface obviously isn't. "I've been through this a lot," Sidney warns a new bunch of teens (known also in these movies as 'cannon fodder'). When Sidney asks Gale if she's ready, the former news reporter replies with, "For this? Never." Wise words for someone who's yet again being thrust into a cat-and-mouse survival horror situation.

Dewey also warns that there are "certain rules to surviving", so it would seem the film will indeed be returning to its trademark analysis of horror movie rules, but perhaps this time they've changed. After all, it's been ten years since the last installment came out, and the horror landscape is ever-changing.

And before the trailer wraps, we're given a tiny clue as to the killer's motivations, with a new character telling the others that the attacks were "all on people related to the original killers". Very interesting. So even from beyond the grave, Billy, Stu, Mickey, Debbie, Roman, Jill, and Charlie hold influence over the lives of Woodsboro's teens. Now that's what you call immortal killers.

"I won't sleep until he's in the ground," Sidney promises before she's greeted by Ghostface, who remarks, "Hello, Sidney. It's an honor." A fan, perhaps? We'll have to wait and see - and to be honest, we don't really want to speculate too much. Like we said, the whole point of a Scream movie is finding out who the killer is for yourself.

The Scream franchise has been a huge hit since its inception way back in 1996, and this year celebrates its 25th anniversary. So it's no surprise that the new movie is set for release on January 14 next year. The question is, will it end up being your favorite scary movie of the New Year..?
