First Look at Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Magic: The Gathering Revealed

While Magic: The Gathering players are getting excited to join Prerelease events for the new set Theros Beyond Death, fans are already looking forward to the next Magic set arriving this April, called Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Magic head designer Mark Rosewater described it as "the monster world" when talking about the plane of Ikoria, and now we have our first look at that brand new world thanks to an ad for the set.

A Redditor shared an advert which is most likely from a Theros Beyond Death booster pack, and the art features a gigantic wolf-like monster with other creatures stampeding. The ad also reveals the return of the green Planeswalker, Vivien. Check it out:

Wizards of the Coast hasn't revealed much information about Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, but Rosewater did tease the new "monster mechanic" last September. "You get to play with monsters, and you get to make monsters," Rosewater said last September. "It's one of the craziest mechanics we've made in quite a while."

Wizards also revealed the official logo for Ikoria:

In addition to the main Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set, they also announced Commander: Ikoria series, which consists of five brand new pre-constructed decks set in Ikoria, described as "Magic's plane of beasts and monsters."

The production description revealed on the Wizards Play Network site also revealed that the set will have a "set of double-sided keyword counters". This could be similar to the punch-out counters we've seen in the Amonkhet set.

With the "create a monster" mechanic and the set of double-sided counters, it sounds like they're doing a lot of innovating things in Ikoria, and I can't wait to see the massive monsters featured in the set and what fun players can brew with the new cards.

Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths will officially be released on April 24, 2020. Prerelease events will take place from April 17-19.
