Final Fantasy XV Director Discusses The Game's Ending, Acknowledges The Messy Story

Final Fantasy XV is a lot of fun, but there's no denying how messy the main story is. Characters are introduced and barely do anything until the end, while certain events blaze through the game quicker than they should. That doesn't make the game any less fun, at least when it comes to the open-world, but it's clear that the story is a mess.

Hajime Tabata, the game's director, acknowledged some of the story's faults during an interview with Kotaku. "Understandably within the main game there were certain aspects that lacked explanation, and that's been some of the feedback we received from fans," he said.Tabata stated that the extra DLC included will flesh out these details, and maybe even fix some of the plotholes.

Tabata also discussed some of the lingering details in the end, regarding the fate of Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto. Fans know that Noctis sacrificed himself to save the world, but it wasn't made clear if his allies survived. The answer is yes, but that doesn't mean they're happy.

"The fact that they were a party of four and one of the party is no longer there, it'll probably be hard to say that they're fully happy. That said, they needed to do what they needed to do, so they had that sense of purpose. And I'm sure they're very proud of what they've achieved and what they've overcome. So in that sense maybe that overlaps with how we feel towards the game itself."

Letting Noctis sacrifice himself for the betterment of the world must not have been easy for the party. We see how close Noctis is with his friends, so his overall sacrifice is still sad, even with all of the cut content.

Final Fantasy XV is available now on the PS4 and Xbox One. A PC version is coming out next year.
