Fans were shocked when it was announced that Sony Pictures Television and Square Enix were working together on a Final Fantasy XIV live-action series. Most fans expected a game like Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy X to get an adaptation first but when you consider how popular Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is these days, this isn't too much of a surprise.
There are those that are worried that in adapting this game to television, the people working on it will want to scale back on some of the game's sillier elements. Thankfully, that isn't the case since Dinesh Shamdasani confirmed to IGN that there will be a lot of Chocobos. If a Final Fantasy series can confirm Chocobos, you know that they will have even sillier and cooler elements.
"Literally, there was no draft of the script that does not have the note, 'More chocobos'. One of the notes that I gave, I gave this note and I got the worst stink eye in a meeting. I said, 'Guys, I know everyone wants chocobos. Page 3 someone rides in on a chocobo for no reason. It's distracting. It's silly. It's too early.' And everyone's like, 'What are you talking about? Everyone should be riding on chocobos in the opening'... So no, there'll be chocobos out the wazoo."
While things could always change, the fact that they're already discussing Chocobos this early is a good sign that this will be a fun adaptation. Basing it on any other online game would have been tricky, look at that Warcraft movie for example, but the fact that Final Fantasy XIV has had so many stories and expansions should make this a compelling watch if done correctly.
Final Fantasy XIV is now available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. No release date for the series has been confirmed.
