It looks like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is bringing back yet another beloved Harry Potter character. The highly anticipated sequel will reportedly feature a young Minerva McGonagall before she started teaching at Hogwarts.
Warner Bros. recently revealed the film's full cast list (via Snitchseeker). Interestingly, the list finally reveals Fiona Glascott's mysterious role and confirms that the Irish actress has been cast as Minerva McGonagall.
McGonagall was previously played by veteran actress Maggie Smith in all eight Harry Potter films. It would be great to see the professor as a young woman but we're still unsure how she will be introduced in Fantastic Beasts 2. There are speculations that Glascott's McGonagall will appear as a Hogwarts student and perhaps shed some light on an old Harry Potter theory.
Fans have previously speculated that McGonagall was a former Quidditch player as evidenced by a plaque beside James Potter's trophy in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. However, the so-called "M.G. McGonagall" might be her relative since the plaque dates back to 1971 (McGonagall was already teaching at Hogwarts during that time). Nevertheless, it's still possible that McGonagall was a gifted athlete when she was younger.
There's also a possibility that McGonagall served as a coach to the young players of Hogwarts at the time. Either way, we are looking forward to meeting the professor as a young woman.
McGonagall will join Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald as the few original Harry Potter characters in Fantastic Beasts 2. We can also expect to see the human form of Voldermort's snake Nagini, thanks to actress Claudia Kim.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will premiere on November 16.
