It's no secret to a lot of fans that Marvel Studios has been championing equality and representation over the last couple of years. However, despite the studio's constant efforts, some parts of the world namely Egypt and Saudi Arabia apparently still aren't ready to acknowledge LGBTQ+ rights.

This is why Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has reportedly been banned in cinemas in the said regions and the main reason behind it is America Chavez is an openly gay character.

While most fans are already aware of her sexual orientation, there's a brief scene in the film that pretty much confirms Chavez's identity and Saudi has reportedly asked Marvel Studios to remove it from the film. As it stands, Disney has refused to make changes to Multiverse of Madness but it remains to be seen if there's still a chance the film could hit cinemas in Egypt, Saudi, and potentially other Gulf nations.

Now, following the controversy, fans are heckling actress Xochitl Gomez who plays the character. Obviously, she had nothing to do with the countries' decision to block the project but many are blaming her for causing the ban due to the film's LGBTQ+ scene. On Instagram, the 15-year-old actress faced backlash over the issue with a lot of fans

I do understand the fans' frustration but to blame Gomez for the situation is quite absurd. I wish people would cut her some slack especially on social media because she clearly had nothing to do with the issue.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits cinemas on May 6, 2022.
