As the hype for Chainsaw Man continues, it seems that fans are split over MAPPA’s latest series. Specifically, Japanese and international fans are divided over what they think of the Chainsaw Man anime.

On Twitter, there’s a lot of discourse about this popular anime, with many fans from outside Japan heaping praise on it. But if you look at tweets from Japanese fans, many are not happy with the adaptation.

While this is not representative of all Japanese anime fans, there’s a significant number of people on Twitter that are voicing their displeasure regarding the Chainsaw Man anime.

One of the main criticisms from Japanese fans is that the anime’s look and feel stray too far from the original manga.

While Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga has a fast pace and stylized art, some Japanese fans say that the anime is dull and slow in comparison.

Fujimoto is a noted fan of films, and Chainsaw Man has often drawn comparisons to cult favorite B-movies. However, it seems that Japanese fans don’t think that the anime is able to capture this well.

Based on these tweets, many seem to blame director Ryu Nakayama. The negativity that went his way because of the online discourse even led him to limit replies to his tweets to followers only.

Aside from the direction of the anime, there are also Japanese fans that have said online how they don’t like the performance of rookie voice actor Kikunosuke Toya as Denji.

On the Other Hand, How Do International Fans Feel About Chainsaw Man?

Fans outside Japan have been reacting positively to the anime since its first episode. Lots of praise has been given to the fight scenes and the soundtrack.

Of course, there are also international fans who are critical of some parts.

Specifically, some were split on the removal of the Muscle Devil in Episode 3. But for the most part, the fans' reactions are positive.

Praise for the series continued following Episode 4’s release yesterday, with many fans noting how they loved the anime-original scenes, especially in the latter half of the episode where Power is assigned to live in Aki’s apartment.

As the anime continues, it will be interesting to see if the Japanese and international fans’ opinions of Chainsaw Man will change.
