Fairy Tail is a surprisingly popular anime and manga, despite being a bit generic when compared to other shonen shows. While it doesn't always have surprises for fans, the franchise has maintained its popularity thanks to the art style and likable characters. This is why it's so surprising to know that we're only getting a console game out now, rather than a few years ago.
Whatever the case, we're getting a Fairy Tail video game in 2020 from Gust and Koei Tecmo. Simply called Fairy Tail, at least for now, the game will supposedly be an RPG and it looks really good. Right now, it's hard to tell if this will be a turn-based JRPG like the Atelier games from Gust or an action RPG like, well, some of the Dynasty Warriors spinoff titles from Koei Tecmo.
It's not yet known if the story will follow what we've seen from the anime and manga, or if it will be an original tale. Author Hiro Mashima will be supervising the game's story, so that should assure fans. Then again, that might just be shorthand for "the author approves of our story because we paid him," but that's not always the case.
Here's an overview of the game:
Demons, dark wizards, dragons, and cats – players will find it all as they start your journey in the land of Fiore. In FAIRY TAIL, wizards play through the adventures of Natsu Dragneel and Lucy Heartfilia, as well as other eccentric members of the Fairy Tale mage guild, on a fun-filled and thrilling quest. GUST Studios is creating the game under the supervision of author Hiro Mashima, promising a faithful recreation for the Fairy Tale world and its unusual inhabitants; including everything from magic to its iconic characters.
As someone who is only slightly familiar with the anime, this does look promising. The visuals are a delight and, depending on what kind of RPG this will be, could be really fun to play. I'll definitely pick this up and should look nice next to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.
Fairy Tail is coming to PS4 and Nintendo Switch in 2020.
