  • Quick Answer: Gina Gershon turned down Friday the 13th Part 2 because she felt the requirement to appear topless during a death scene was silly and exploitative.

Gina Gershon, best known for her role as Cristal Connors in the 1995 cult classic Showgirls, has revealed why she turned down a lead role in the 1981 slasher Friday the 13th Part 2.

The House of Versace star was offered a major part in the iconic franchise, but something told her to say no. So, what was her reason?

While promoting her new memoir, AlphaPussy: How I Survived the Valley and Learned to Love My Boobs, Gina Gershon told Fox News Digital about the time she was offered the lead in Friday the 13th Part 2.

Despite the potential career boost and the opportunity to make her onscreen debut, the now-63-year-old star decided to pass on the role after learning she would have to appear topless.

"I was offered a lead in that movie," she said. "And, of course, I was so excited to act in movies, but it definitely felt kind of exploitative to me and a little silly that right before she gets killed, her top has to come off."

Gershon shared more details about the death scene in her book, noting how female roles were typically handled in slasher films.

"At the time, those kinds of slasher movies always had girls dying with their breasts exposed," she wrote, per Fox News. "My character would be killed by a stake through the heart, blood dripping down her t---. That seemed pretty lame to me: exploitation 101."

While showing skin wasn’t automatically a dealbreaker for Gershon, she had serious reservations about the scene and sought her father’s advice.

“He said, 'It’s your body. If you’re comfortable with it, I’m comfortable with it,'" she recalled.

In the end, it came down to her gut feeling: she simply didn’t want to do it.

“I wasn’t comfortable with it. It seemed silly to me," she explained. "Not that I had anything against nudity — I grew up on European films — but only if it makes sense for the character and the story. But when it just seems silly, I don’t know. It just felt like it was something that wasn’t for me."

Gershon ultimately made her onscreen debut in Beatlemania: The Movie, the same year Friday the 13th Part 2 was released. She continued building her career, eventually achieving her breakout role in Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 erotic cult hit Showgirls.

Friday the 13th Part 2

One notable death scene in Friday the 13th Part 2 involved the character Sandra, played by Marta Kober.

Sandra was making love with her boyfriend, Jeff (Bill Randolph), when they were killed by the antagonist Jason Voorhees.

Jason drove a spear through them while they were in bed, a scene famously referred to as a "double impalement."

Originally, the scene included more extensive topless nudity, but it was heavily cut in the final release when producers learned Kober was only 16 at the time.

The fully uncensored footage, however, showed the spear penetration and more of that infamous death scene, and it circulated on VHS tapes.

Amy Steel starred as the protagonist, Ginny Field, a child psychology student and camp counselor trainee in Friday the 13th Part 2. She embodied the "final girl" trope, ultimately confronting Jason in the film.
