Ewan McGregor Says Obi-Wan Series First Started As A Star Wars Movie

Lucasfilm might have surprised fans when it announced that Ewan McGregor would be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new Disney+ series, but before the announcement was made, rumors were going around saying that the studio was developing a movie for the Jedi Knight.

Now, McGregor confirms those rumors, saying that the project started as a movie before turning into a series for Disney's upcoming streaming site. The Star Wars prequel trilogy star spoke in an interview with Comingsoon.net to talk about his upcoming film, Doctor Sleep, and during the discussion, the actor opened up about his new Star Wars project.

According to McGregor, he had been slated to reprise his role as everyone's favorite Jedi in a Star Wars spinoff movie, however, Solo: A Star Wars Story's box office performance made Disney pause and re-evaluate how it handled the franchise.

"It wasn't always going to be a series, not initially," McGregor said. "When we first started talking about, that wasn't really in the cards but everything's changed so much, so quickly. It's really exciting that it is now. I'm really into the idea to be able to tell the story over several hours instead of just one hit. I think it's going to be quite cool."

A series gives fans more time with Obi-Wan though, so it isn't entirely a bad thing for Disney to have decided to forego the movie and opt for a show instead. Last week, McGregor revealed a few details about the project, saying that the series would run for six episodes and that it would feature a storyline between Episode III and Episode IV when the Jedi Order had fallen apart.

McGregor's Obi-Wan series doesn't have an official name or release date, but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
