When the Birds of Prey movie was initially announced, a number of fans have speculated that the Black Mask would be depicted as gay in the upcoming movie. Then, the release of its first trailer led fans to believe that this could actually be true, and it looks like they aren't wrong.

At the Birds of Prey premiere, Variety directly asked Ewan Mcgregor and Chris Messina regarding their characters' sexuality in the film, as well as asking about whether or not Black Mask and Victor Zsasz are more than just friends.

"It's very complicated," the Star Wars alum said. "Their relationship is very much based… there's a want and a need in there for sure." While Messina stated that there's a "real love of anarchy."

When Messina was still in the process of sharing some details, seemingly trying to avoid saying some spoilers, McGregor interjected. "More than likely, yes," he revealed. Both actors then laughed, while the interviewer faces the camera to say, "You heard it here first."

The idea of these villains being gay isn't particularly received well by everyone. However, most of the fans support this take on these characters.

Aside from McGregor and Messina, Birds of Prey also stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is set for release on February 7.
