Eternals: Kevin Feige Defends Gemma Chan Returning as New MCU Character

Gemma Chan is one of only a few people who get to play two different characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She had previously appeared in Captain Marvel before returning as Sersi in Eternals. But why hire the same actor twice? Kevin Feige has stated that he and director Chloe Zhao immediately agreed to bring Chan back for the new role.

Entertainment Weekly recently did an extensive cover of Eternals, speaking with the cast and crew. The report reveals that the Marvel boss was determined to cast Chan in the MCU flick although she had already played Minn-Erva in the Brie Larson movie.

Feige stated that it would be a huge mistake if they didn't cast Chan in Eternals. "It would have been shooting ourselves in the foot," he said before adding that there were other MCU actors who were initially believed to be wrong for the part simply because they had a previous comic book role.

"I can go back to Chris Evans being on the list for Captain America, and some people said, 'Oh, well, he played the Human Torch [in 2005's Fantastic Four]. Maybe we shouldn't consider him.' And we said, 'No, that's okay,' and the rest is history," Feige said.

It's great to know that Feige has faith in Chan and her talents so much that he wants to bring her back for a new project. We've only seen a glimpse of Sersi in the Eternals trailer but she appears to be an intriguing character who will play an important role in the MCU. With that in mind, we're looking forward to seeing her in action this November.

Marvel's Eternals will also star Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Gil Birmingham, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie. The film is currently scheduled to premiere on November 5, 2021.
