Eternals Director Chloe Zhao Open to Direct a Star Wars Film

Earlier this year, Chloe Zhao made history as the first woman of color to win an Academy Award for Best Director for her terrific directorial work on Nomadland. Now, she has Eternals on her next slate which will be her first foray into blockbuster films and people have been wondering about what's next in her soon-to-be-illustrious career.

Speaking with The Playlist, Zhao was asked if she would be interested to direct a Star Wars film given that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is working on one. She simply responded, "I would, I’ll do anything Kevin asked me to do."

This isn't the first time that Zhao expressed her interest in directing a Star Wars film. In an interview with Empire Magazine earlier this month, she was also asked the same question in which she responded, "Hmmmm. I have to tread very carefully with what I say here. [laughs] Yes. Let’s just say, it’s a world I have so much reverence for because it was such an important part of my life."

Given that Feige is currently developing a Star Wars film at the moment, there might be a chance for Zhao to venture into the galaxy far, far away. At least we know now that if Feige asked Zhao to helm his Star Wars film, she would say yes.

If Zhao would end up directing a Star Wars film, it might take a while since she is also slated to direct a Dracula film which is reportedly going to be a futuristic sci-fi western. There's also the fact that if Marvel greenlights an Eternals sequel, there is a chance that she will come back to direct it as well.

It wouldn't be a bad idea at all to see Zhao direct a Star Wars film. You can argue that she will bring a very distinct vision to the franchise just like what she did in Eternals (at least based on the first reactions from those who have seen it). It would be great to see her version of Star Wars and how she will make it given that she is known for her naturalistic style. There's no doubt that fans would love to see her tackle the franchise.
