An official E.T. sequel was just released today, but don't expect it to be a full-length film. In fact, it's an Xfinity commercial called "A Holiday Reunion", and it premiered this morning during Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and that "reunion" features actor Henry Thomas and E.T., the stars of Steven Spielberg's 1982 science fiction classic, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Xfinity is the digital cable and internet provider owned by Comcast, so if you're wondering how E.T. is connected, Comcast owns NBC, the network that aired the parade, and it also owns Universal Pictures, which owns E.T.
The online commercial premiered on iO9, and you can watch the full four-minute commercial above but the one that premiered on TV was only two-minutes long.
"The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people's minds and hearts," Thomas said in a press release shared to iO9 "It's really a win-win."
The commercial features E.T. returning to Earth after nearly 40 years, meeting Elliott's family, and flying on a bike with Elliott's kids before E.T. leaves Earth again before the video concludes with the message "Reconnect for the holidays."
