When Eminem announced that his album would have a song in the Venom soundtrack, many thought it was great news since the rapper's harsh lyrics can match the film's violence. One thing fans would never associate with Eminem is Kingdom Hearts, a crossover game featuring Disney and Final Fantasy characters. Until now, at least.
A Rolling Stone interview with Illadaproducer, one of the producers for Eminem's new album Kamikaze, has confirmed that the song Good Guy features a sample from Kingdom Hearts. The said sample comes from the female vocals that appear in the background throughout the song but trying to decipher which track from the game series its sampling is near-impossible.
Illadaproducer said that they purposely made the sample unrecognizable but they still cut a deal with Square Enix to use it. This was a wise move since the game does have Disney properties in it and they wouldn't want to deal with a lawsuit from them or Square Enix.
"That's me doing my video game thing. Kingdom Hearts. It's a Japanesevideogame, and that's the theme song from it. It's one of the dopest melodies I've ever heard. Shout out Japanese videogamesand Japanimation for inspiration. Filtered it, did some chops, did some processing to it. I basically made it unrecognizable, but I know they would have still found it. That's why we had to deal with the clearance. But when I do anything I try to make it to where it's not fully recognizable."
Listening to the song, it really is hard to identify what the sample track from Kingdom Hearts is. It doesn't sound like Simple and Clean from the first game or Sanctuary, which appeared in the second game. The song from Kingdom Hearts 3, Don't Think Twice, barely resembles the sample as well. Hardcore fans will likely spend countless hours trying to decipher it but they could just enjoy the song for what it is.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming to PS4 and Xbox One on January 25, 2019. Eminem's Kamikaze album is available now in digital streaming services.
