Dragon Ball fans will need to wait a while longer for the next Super movie, but they can at least look forward to an exciting cinema release. That’s because Toei recently announced that Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is returning to US cinemas next month.

The film’s re-release is also noteworthy as the Extended Edition will be screened. Originally, this version was only available on home video.

There have been over a dozen Dragon Ball films, but Battle of Gods is still one of the most memorable. This is because it was the first movie in the franchise to be considered canon.

Most popular shonen anime franchises like One Piece and My Hero Academia get anime film releases. But for the most part, these films are not canon. This is also the case with most of the Dragon Ball movies.

This changed with Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, which was released in Japan back in 2013.

Specifically, the film was considered canon at the time as original creator Akira Toriyama was heavily involved in the movie’s production.

Because of this, the anime was a memorable one for many fans. It also helped that its comedic moments harkened back to the original Dragon Ball series.

Now though, its canon status is not as clear-cut because the Dragon Ball Super manga adapted the film’s story in its first arc.

Technically, the Dragon Ball Super arc is the canon one. But because the first arc is essentially a remake of Battle of Gods, the movie’s general events are still considered canon by many fans.

It has been over a decade since the movie’s initial release. To celebrate, Toei Animation announced that it will re-release the Battle of Gods in its extended cut.

The announcement was made via the Toei Animation official X (formerly Twitter) account. There, the limited run was confirmed.

Battle of Gods will be released in selected cinemas in the US on October 17 and 18. Tickets are now on sale on the Fathom Events website.

Currently, there’s no word yet on more screening dates. This means fans will need to get their tickets ASAP given the movie’s two-day theatrical run.
