Dragon Ball Super Chapter 85 Continues to Drag Battle vs. Gas

Dragon Ball Gas

Dragon Ball Super Chapter 85, titled To Each His Own Answer, was released today on Viz Media, and fans get to see the continuation of Goku and Vegeta's battle against Gas of the Heeter Force. Ultra Ego Vegeta and Ultra Instinct Goku teamed-up in the previous chapter, but even that epic team-up wasn't enough to take down Gas. In this month's chapter, Goku figures out the best form to fight Gas: Ultra Instinct - Sign form.

Much of Chapter 85 focuses on Goku beating Gas up, and it's action-packed, but sadly, it's starting to feel like a drag. The Granolah the Survivor Arc no longer feels like it's about the titular lone Cerealian survivor as it focuses more on the conflict against Gas and the Heeter Force while the current battle doesn't have a lot of emotional stake from both sides.

As Gas continues to get a new transformation, largely thanks to Elec reminding him of his true purpose, there are no significant plot or character developments in the latest chapter, unlike the latest chapter of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, which revealed a major plot twist while also delivering some action sequences.

One of the reasons why Granolah the Survivor Arc is Dragon Ball Super's storylines is how Gas is an overpowered villain that makes Goku and Vegeta's strongest forms look useless. Sure, we get to see Vegeta unleash a new Ultra Ego form that helps him get stronger the more damage he takes, but that turned out to be a failure, so what's the point of introducing a new power-up if it doesn't even come close to defeating the villain?

Dragon Ball franchise is known for its endless power-ups, but at least the previous arcs built-up to them well, and you can see the results of their training and mastery pay off in their battles. For instance, the Tournament of Power of the Universe Survival Saga focused on the fight against Universe 6's Jiren, but the reason it's exciting is that Jiren was not just an overpowered and typical "evil" villiain, he also brought out the best of Goku while spectators cheered when the Saiyan unleashed his Ultra Instinct form or how he and Frieza teamed-up to eliminate Jiren.

Granolah the Survivor Arc doesn't have that same excitement; instead, manga readers are forced to get dragged into a conflict that feels pointless. What happened to the current arc's story? What about Granolah's drive for revenge? Who cares about an overpowerd villain like Gas, even if he fought Goku's father, Bardock 40 years ago in Planet Cereal? What's the point of the flashback if it doesn't seem to make a huge impact in the current fight anyway?
