Dragon Ball: Evolution Compelled Akira Toriyama To Revive Dragon Ball Anime

If you've been a Dragon Ball fan, you'd know how much of an abomination Dragon Ball: Evolution was. The 2009 Hollywood live-action adaptation totally wrecked the characters and lore of the beloved anime/manga franchise. But the franchise's awesome new series Dragon Ball Super probably wouldn't exist today if that film never happened. The way Evolution ruined what fans love compelled series creator Akira Toriyama to involve himself in the creation of new Dragon Ball content.

As Toriyama said in the opening comment of the 30th Anniversary Dragon Ball Super History Book:

"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime, so it seems that DB has grown on me much that I can't leave it alone."

Toriyama is referring to when he returned to help compose the script for the 2013 film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. Toriyama had expressed how unhappy he was with what Battle of the Gods was originally supposed to be, so he changed the story entirely. He was also unhappy with Dragon Ball Super's animation quality in some of its early episodes, so he had to speak up.

Dragon Ball Super is set to air on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami still airs the English dub of Dragon Ball Super on Adult Swim Saturdays at 9:30 p.m. It's also available to stream on FunimationNOW and Amazon.
