Doomsday Clock #1 Lenticular Cover Is A Middle Finger To Watchmen Creators

DC has revealed the lenticular cover of Doomsday Clock #1, and it is a big middle finger to the creators of Watchmen; Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Admittedly, the latter might not be too bothered by it, since he did draw the aforementioned cover, but it does continue the exploitation of the critically acclaimed series. Having Rorschach front and center in the image will either excite or anger fans of the legendary comic, but it will get people talking.

Making a sequel to Watchmen should be considered blasphemous, since the original mini-series had a perfect ending that didn't need to be followed up on. Revealing that Doctor Manhattan was the one responsible for the New 52 is a head scratcher, so Geoff Johns will have to do a lot of convincing with this 12-issue maxi-series.

Of course, this doesn't mean Doomsday Clock isn't interesting or intriguing. In fact, the sheer audacity of the concept is quite ballsy. It will be neat seeing the Watchmen characters interact with the rest of the DC universe. That doesn't make it right of course, but if Johns has an interesting story to tell with these characters, it might be worth following.

This isn't the first time DC has exploited Watchmen. A few years ago, the company launched a line of Before Watchmen specials, which followed the lives of various characters prior to the events of Watchmen. Most of these comics got a mixed reception, though fans have enjoyed the ones that centered on the Minutemen and Silk Spectre.

Doomsday Clock #1 will be available on November 22. Geoff Johns promised that it's a series fans of DC and Watchmen will like. Will it really pay tribute to the work of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons? We'll have to wait and see.
